Opportunities - Re'eh 5772

Rav Pam would say that to do Chesed to another person, you can give him Tzedakah that is Chesed or you can give him a job. That is a greater Chesed. When you give him a job and he is able to earn his keep himself. We all understand that Asakta Bo is a greater Mitzvah.

Says Rav Pam, the Ribbono Shel Olam works the same way. If a person is not deserving Hashem could give him Chesed. Hashem could give him something more than what he deserves. However, HKB”H treats human beings in the best way. What HKB”H does is he gives a person an opportunities to do Mitzvos. When a person is lacking in the Yemei Hadin HKB”H puts in his way an opportunity, perhaps an Aveida (a lost object) that he could pick up and could return. Perhaps he would walk in the street and see a woman and her children having a very hard time pushing a carriage and schlepping her bundles and you can help that person. HKB”H puts in the persons way opportunities to sort of have a job to keep. And that he explained, was the very special Derech of HKB”H as it says in the Parsha 13:18 (וְנָתַן-לְךָ רַחֲמִים וְרִחַמְךָ). HKB”H gives you Rachamim and HKB”H gives you opportunities and then he has Rachmanus on you. With this Rav Pam explained Hashem’s Midda of V’rav Chesed V’emes. Emes means the Ikkur Din. Chesed is more. What is the V’rav Chesed V’emes? Hashem’s Chesed is that he gives you opportunities. B’emes, then Hashem can do the Din Emes and you will have the Zechusim to be Soveil the Din. How beautiful.

This fits so nicely with something that I mentioned a year ago on Avinu Malkeinu Kasveinu B’sefer Zechuyos (write us in the book of merits). Very very mysterious. What is the book of merits?

Rav Elyashiv said and I have seen this in other places that B’sefer Zechuyos (write us in the book of merits) in the things we do we should have the opportunity to have Zechusim, to have Zechuyos. If we go places and we have the opportunity to do Zechuyos then we will be Zoche to Din, the Ikkur Hadin.

Pre-Temple Regel - Re'eh 5772

Let me move on to a Ramban in this week’s Parsha. This Ramban is very important because it explains a mystery in Nach. The Ramban actually has two parts. One is in 12:8 where the Torah commands You should not do as we do today each man what is right in his eyes. What exactly is the Torah forbidding? It is very hard to understand. After all, Moshe Rabbeinu was saying to the people you are doing something wrong, he should have given them Mussar. He seems to be saying that today it is ok but when you enter Eretz Yisrael don’t do what you are doing today. The Ramban explains as follows. ומה שאמרו רבותינו (ספרי טז): בדבר הנידר והנדב [שקרב בבמה ושאין נידר ונדב] שאינו קרב בבמה, מדרש מיתור המקרא, כמו שהוא מפורש בפרק בתרא דזבחים (קיז ב):) In the Midbar there was no obligation to bring Korbanos. If one wished he brought a Korban. When a person wanted to eat meat he brought a Korban and ate meat. There was no obligation. Even the Sholosh Regalim there was no obligation to bring a Korban on Yom Tov. Moshe Rabbeinu told them you are going to go to Eretz Yisrael and build a Bais Hamikdash Today is voluntary, you bring a Korban when you want. No, when you enter Eretz Yisrael there will be rules and obligations. Every Chag, every one of the Sholosh Regalim you will be Oleh Regel and you will be obligated to bring specific Korbanos.

At the end of Parshas Re’ey in 16:11 (בַּמָּקוֹם, אֲשֶׁר יִבְחַר יְרוָר אֱלֹריךָ, לְשַׁכֵּן שְׁמוֹ, שָׁם) the Ramban says even more.
) B’lashon Efsher that even when the Jews entered Eretz Yisrael for the first 440 years there was no Bais Hamikdash and during those years there was no obligation to be Oleh Regel on the 3 Chagim. The Mitzvah to be Oleh Regel is only when there is a Bais Hamikdash, however, when there is no Bais Hamikdash there is no obligation to be Oleh Regel. There is a tremendous Chiddush in these 2 Ramban’s. That the Mitzvos that we take for granted, Aliyah L’regel, and many of the Korbanos, the Ramban even mentions the Korban of a B’chor that one was not obligated to bring it to the Bais Hamikdash until the Bais Hamikdash was built. These are the words of the Ramban.

What does this have to do with Nach? Well obviously it teaches us a Chiddush that for 440 years there is no obligation to be Oleh Regel. More than that it explains a mystery. In the beginning of Shmuel Aleph we are told that a man named Elkana would be Oleh Regel, would go to the Bais Hamikdash. A well known Medrash tells us that every year he would take a different route. The reason for this was because people were not being Oleh Regel. By going a different route every time, Elkana who was known as a Gadol B’yisrael would encourage others to follow him and others would come along with him to be Oleh Regel. We wondered this was a great generation, why weren’t the people being Oleh Regel? They needed Elkana? According to the Ramban it is beautiful. There was no obligation to be Oleh Regel it was totally voluntary. Therefore, we understand why Elkana went out of his way to encourage the people to go.

More than that. The Posuk says at the beginning of Shmuel Aleph 1:3 (וְעָלָה הָאִישׁ הַהוּא מֵעִירוֹ מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה). This man would go up from his city from year to year. Chazal Darshun (מִיָּמִים יָמִימָה) as the Metzudas Tzion brings on the spot, that once a year he was Oleh Regel. We always wonder what in the world is going on, Elkana the Gadol Hador is only Oleh Regel once a year? It is a Pliya!

According to the Ramban we understand. There was no obligation to be Oleh Regel and therefore, he would go once a year to be Oleh Regel and in that way to keep the Mitzvah of being Oleh Regel which was not obligatory on a voluntary basis. Obviously this Ramban is a big Yesod in understanding the beginning Pesukim in Sefer Shmuel.

Half-Kosher People - Re'eh 5772

Today the 28th day of the month of Av is the Yahrtzeit of our Rebbi, Moreinu HaRav Pam and I would like to share with you some thoughts connected to ideas that he said.

One of the things that was Margila P’pumai (things that he said very often) regarding the Parsha of Behaimos Temaios in this week’s Parsha we have the Parsha of the Simanim of the animal that is Kosher. Of course the 2 Simanim are that an animal that swallows its cud and has split hoofs is Kosher. The Torah lists the 4 animals that have only one Siman that is Kosher and therefore, are Treif. It appears from the Posuk that these 4 animals are somehow worse because they have one of the Simanei Kashrus.

Rav Pam would repeat the Klei Yakar. The Klei Yakar says that a human being too has 2 Simanei Kashrus and they are 1) Bain Adam L’chaveiro and 2) Bain Adam Lamakom.  Serving HKB”H with things that have to do with the direct service of Hashem such as Davening and Learning and serving HKB”H in Bain Adam L’chaveiro in the service of other human beings and dealing with other people. These are two Simanim of a Kosher Jew. If a person has one Siman and not the other said Rav Pam, is worse. In other words if you have a person who Davens well and Learns well but when it comes to dealing with his fellow man, he is cruel, he is miserable, or he is dishonest, it would be better if he didn’t Learn and Daven well. He brings Chillul Hashem, a shame on the name of Bnei Torah because people look at him as a Ben Torah who Davens and Learns and yet in his Bein Adam L’chaveiro he is disgusting and he is not behaving properly. The reverse is also true. You have people who are very good, very kind, and very nice to others. However, when it comes to serving HKB”H and being careful in Mitzvos there is something missing. They are not careful to Daven and they are not careful to Learn. Such a person too brings down Sheim Shamayim because people will admire his kindness to other human beings and will somehow feel that it is not as important to serve HKB”H in the Bain Adam Lamakom. This was Margila P’pumai, a common expression of Rav Pam in teaching us. You have to have both, be kind to human beings and faithful in serving HKB”H.

The Rambam expands on this idea in Shemoneh Perakim. The Rambam says in serving HKB”H there is an attitude of Rotze Ani U’ma E’se V’avinu Shebashamayim Gozar Olai. I would like to do an Aveira but I won’t because HKB”H said don’t do it. This attitude of Rotze Ani that I would love to do the Aveira but HKB”H said don’t do it, says the Rambam is not an appropriate attitude in Bain Adam L’chaveiro, in Mitzvos Sichliyos. For a person to say I would be cruel to someone else but I am not going to be because the Torah forbids it this is a wrong attitude. A Mitzvas Sichli, a logical Mitzvah, something a person should ingrain in his nature, should do naturally. On the other hand a Mitzva of Bain Adam Lamakom (a Mitzva between man and Hashem) such as shaking a Lulav or eating only Kosher food, there a person should say Rotze Ani I will be happy to eat Treif food or I would be happy not to shake a Lulav U’ma E’se Avinu Shebashamayim Gozar Olai, but what will I do as Hashem commanded me to do as he commanded and that I will do. This is a strong distinction between Bain Adam L’chaveiro Mitzvos (logical Mitzvos) and Bain Adam Lamakom Mitzvos.

We by our nature twist things around. Most people today when it comes to stealing they will say well I would love to steal but what should I do Hashem forbade it and Boruch Hashem they won’t steal. When it comes to Treifos they say pig I would never eat bacon. It is something that goes against the nature of a Jew. This is the reverse of the way it should be. Someone who serves HKB”H properly when it comes to stealing it is disgusting to him, to take someone else’s thing. When it comes to eating Chazeir though, Chazeir is delicious. U’ma E’se V’avinu Shebashamayim Gozar Olai.

In the Sefer Tuvcha Yabi’u on this week’s Parsha he relates that there were some Jews who lived in an apartment house and on the ground floor of the apartment house there was a store that was rented by someone who sold (Nevailos & Treif) forbidden food and even bacon (Chazeir).  It disgusted them every day when they walked in and out of their apartment building to pass this place with the aroma of Treif food. They went to an Adom Gadol to ask for an Eitza. The Adom Gadol said what do you mean? He showed them a Chasam Sofer. The Chasam Sofer says how is one to accomplish the Mitzvos of this week’s Parsha. A commandment not to eat Treif food. How does one actually actively go and perform a Mitzvah which is Shev V’al Taaseh, which is a bad action? Says the Chasam Sofer when a person sees it he should say to himself wow that is good but I am not eating it because the Torah forbids it. Now these people had a brand new attitude. Every time they walked in and out of their apartment building and they passed the store selling Treif food they would say Harini Muchan U’mizuman L’kayeim Mitzvah, I am now going to perform the Mitzvah of telling myself Avi Shebashayim Gozer Olai.

The Chessed Of Pinchas - Pinchas 5770

The Chidushai Harim asks that it says in Shulchan Aruch Siman 128, that a Kohen who kills someone else even by accident becomes Pasul from Nesias Kapaim (Duchaning). So how could it be that Pinchas by killing Zimri became Dafka a Kohen?
The Teretz that the Chidushai Harim offers is that the reason that a Kohen who kills someone is Pasul from Duchaning is because the Yesoid of Duchaning is the Middah of Chesed (kindness). Someone who kills did something that is the opposite of Chesed so he can’t be the conduit for Chesed.  In the case of Pinchas killing Zimri, the killing came from an Ahavah to Klal Yisrael. It came as a protection to Klal Yisrael. Since it came as a protection to Klal Yisrael, Adaraba, it came as Chesed. Since it came because of the Middas Hachesed it has the opposite effect, that of increased Chesed, which makes it possible for Pinchas to become a Kohen.
This idea was seen in Rav Tzaddoik’s Resisai Laila in a general way. He says that all Mitzvois have the power to be Mehapeich something that seems B’Pashtus to be Din and turn it into a Chesed. He gives as an example from Devarim 14:22 (דברים יד, כב) עשר תעשר עשר בשביל שתתעשר   The Gemara in Maseches Taanis on 9a (top line) Darshuns the Posuk this way.
One would think that giving money to Tzedakah would make you have less money. However, because there is an aspect of Mitzvah in the giving of the Tzedakah, the result is the opposite. Something that otherwise would be Memayait now becomes something that gives.
The same thing he says by the Ir Hanidachas. When an entire city is killed out, one would think that it makes people into cruel people. The Posuk in Parshas Re’eh says in Devarim 13:18, The result of killing a Ir Hanidachas is that Hakadoish Baruch Hu gives someone the strength and the Middah of Rachmanus.
The Gemara Darshuns in Maseches Shabbos 151b (9 lines from the bottom), Rav Tzaddoik says that when someone mixes a Mitzvah into something that would normally cause a retraction and a negative thing or influence to occur, once the Mitzvah is incorporated into his action the negative influence doesn’t come and just the opposite, it turns into a Davar Toiv.
That is the Middah that we learn from Pinchas, that even though he was involved in Machloikes, he got a Bris of Shaleim. Even though he was involved in Retzicha, he got Chayei Oilam. He got to live for always which is the opposite of Retzicha which is less life, he got a life of Nitzchiyois.

J021 - Miracles - 3-7

Shabbasos & Shevuos - Sefirah 5770

Why do we call this period of time the days of the Omer? The Omer was a Korban brought on the second day of Pesach and that is when we start counting Sefirah. The 49 days it seems has nothing to do with the Omer, it is only the starting point of the counting which seems coincidently. We are actually counting from Pesach to Shevuous. It is funny that we call it Sefiras Haomer.
In the Sefer HaKsav V’hakabalah he says a beautiful Pshat which is a great insight. There are 49 days of Sefirah. He asks why in this week’s Parsha does the Posuk say, טו  וּסְפַרְתֶּם לָכֶם, מִמָּחֳרַת הַשַּׁבָּת, מִיּוֹם הֲבִיאֲכֶם, אֶת-עֹמֶר הַתְּנוּפָה:  שֶׁבַע שַׁבָּתוֹת, תְּמִימֹת תִּהְיֶינָה it calls the seven weeks שַׁבָּתוֹת. Whereas in Parshas Re’ei when it talks about Sefira the Posuk says in Devarim 16:9 ט  שִׁבְעָה שָׁבֻעֹת, תִּסְפָּר-לָךְ:  מֵהָחֵל חֶרְמֵשׁ, בַּקָּמָה, תָּחֵל לִסְפֹּר, שִׁבְעָה שָׁבֻעוֹת why is there the difference between Shabosois and Shavuois?
He explains as follows. Really they are Shevuois, weeks. So why here does it refer to Sefira as the Sheva Shabosois? Shabasois is a language that implies a break, and a time to rest. In this week’s Parsha, the Parsha brings the Posuk of the Omer, then instructs us on the counting of the Omer, and after the 49 days you bring the Shtei Halechem which is an offering brought on the 50th day. It seems to not only mix the Omer into the Mitzvah of the seven weeks but also the Shtei Halechem.
The HaKsav V’hakabala says the Omer was an offering of barley brought on Pesach which permitted the Yidden to eat from the new crop of wheat. During those seven weeks it was still prohibited to bring from the new crop on the Mizbaiach. On Shavuous the Shtei Halechem offering which was wheat was Matir meaning it permitted bringing from the new crop on the Mizbaiach as a Korban. So for these seven weeks the Omer mattered. This is because for these seven weeks there was a Matir (there was something that permitted) the eating of the new crops to ordinary people. After Shevuous it was Muttar everywhere. It didn’t need the Omer, it was really the Shtei Halechem that permitted it everywhere. So the seven weeks are the seven weeks of the Omer. The seven weeks of the Omer has an influence. Sheva Shabasois is a language of a break of what was before it, a change. Now the Omer created what was the seven weeks of the Yimei HaOmer. This beautiful thought and Vort connects the Omer to these seven weeks.
It is also really an insight because the Omer was from barley which is animal food. The Shtei Halechem is from Chitim which is the fine bread that we eat. From when Klal Yisrael left Mitzrayim until they got the Torah there was a freedom, something new was Muttar. However, it was inferior, it was before they were obligated to keep the Mitzvois. It was an inferior time. When they came to Shevuous they brought the Shtei Halechem, it was a time of Kabbolas Hatorah. A time that something superior happened to them. That is symbolized by the fact that there was a new Heter, symbolized by the Heter to eat the new crop, was the finer food of wheat.
So these are actually seven weeks of Omer. Seven weeks of an inferior state. A state of sort of a barley Heter. A time that we are lacking Kabbolas Hatorah. Afterwards during the time of the Shtei Halechem, was a superior time. It is interesting that those who say Hinneni Muchan Umizuman prior to making the Beracha on Sefiras Haomer, mention both Korbanois. Without this Vort it would be strange to mention the Korban Omer and the Shtei Halechem. This is an extraordinary insight into Sefiras Haomer.

The Succah & The Clouds - Mishpatim 5771

The GRA says a Pshat regarding the Sholosh Regalim. It is interesting to note that Sukkos is referred to here in Parshas Mishpatim and in Parshas Ki Sisa as (חַג הָאָסִף). (חַג הָאָסִף) means the holiday that takes place at the time that the Tevua is gathered in from the fields. Later in Parshas Emor in 23:34 ( דַּבֵּר אֶל-בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, לֵאמֹר:  בַּחֲמִשָּׁה עָשָׂר יוֹם, לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי הַזֶּה, חַג הַסֻּכּוֹת שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, לַירוָר) and Parshas Re’ey 16:13(חַג הַסֻּכֹּת תַּעֲשֶׂה לְךָ, שִׁבְעַת יָמִים:  בְּאָסְפְּךָ--מִגָּרְנְךָ, וּמִיִּקְבֶךָ) the Yom Tov is referred to by its more popular name of Sukkos.
The greater significance of this fits with the Shittas HaGRA in Shir Hashirim that talks about the Sukkos that we sit in on Chag HaSukkos are according to one Man D’omar K’negged the Ananei Hakavod (the clouds of glory) that surrounded Klal Yisrael in the Midbar. Most Meforshim understand that this refers to the fact that the entire 40 years in the Midbar the Ananei Hakavod protected Klal Yisrael.
There are many difficulties with this. The Tur’s Kasha of why such a Yom Tov should be celebrated in Tishrei instead of Chodesh Nissan where it belongs?
The Kasha of why the Ananei Hakavod are remembered with a Yom Tov more than the Man or the B’air Hamayim? These 3 go together because it was in the Zechus of Moshe, Aharon, and Miriyam. Why would the Ananei Hakavod have a special Zechus that there is a Yom Tov K’negdom?
Due to these questions and others, the GRA explains that Negged the Ananei Hakavod doesn’t mean the protection of the Ananei Hakavod at all. Instead he says it refers to the Ananei Hakavod in the following instance.  As we know that when Moshe Rabbeinu was up at Har Sinai, Klal Yisrael sinned with the Cheit HaEigel. The Shechina which had resided amongst Klal Yisrael was no longer among them. They were forgiven on the 10th day of Tishrei, Yom Hakippurim and Moshe Rabbeinu came down from Har Sinai on the 10th day. On the 11th day of Tishrei he commanded Klal Yisrael to build a Mishkan. Klal Yisrael responded by bringing donations for two days (as can be seen in Parshas Vayakheil 36:3 (וַיִּקְחוּ מִלִּפְנֵי מֹשֶׁה, אֵת כָּל-הַתְּרוּמָה אֲשֶׁר הֵבִיאוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל לִמְלֶאכֶת עֲבֹדַת הַקֹּדֶשׁ--לַעֲשֹׂת אֹתָהּ; וְהֵם הֵבִיאוּ אֵלָיו עוֹד, נְדָבָה--בַּבֹּקֶר בַּבֹּקֶר) by the words (בַּבֹּקֶר בַּבֹּקֶר)). Those two days were the 12th and 13th days of Tishrei. On the 14th day of Tishrei the work began, the Chachmei Leiv gathered and received their instructions on how to build the Mishkan. On the 15th day of Tishrei the actual physical work of building the Mishkan commenced. At that time, the Anan which represented the Shechina, protected Klal Yisrael and not the Ananei Hakavod and the Anan came back and resided among Klal Yisrael.
Says the GRA, it is that return of the Anan on the 15th day of Tishrei which the Mitzvah of sitting in a Sukkah on Sukkos is in observance of. The Mitzva is an observance of that return of the Ananei Hakavod. As the GRA says, on Yom Tov we say Ata V’chartanu Mikol Ho’amim Ahavta Banu V’ratzisa Banu. Where Ata V’chartanu Mikol Ho’amim is K’negged Pesach, when Klal Yisrael was chosen. Ahavta Banu, the love of Hakadosh Baruch Hu is a reference to Chag Hashavuos, the Chuppah and marriage of Klal Yisrael. V’ratzisa Banu which is a language of forgiveness is a reference to Chag Hasukkos. The Mitzvah of Sukkos on Sukkos is a remembrance of the Kappara and the return of the Ananei Hakavod. All of this is in the GRA on Shir Hashirim.

We now return to Parshas Mishpatim. In Parshas Mishpatim and Parshas Ki Sisa which are the Parshios that were said prior to the Cheit Ha’eigel, this Yom Tov is called (חַג הָאָסִף). There was as of yet no Mitzvah of sitting in a Sukkah. This Mitzvah of sitting in a Sukkah didn’t come until after the Cheit Ha’eigel. This was after the 15th day of Tishrei when the Anan returned and there was something to remember. Therefore, here it is called (חַג הָאָסִף). After the Cheit Ha’eigel in Parshas Emor and Re’ey it is called (חַג הַסֻּכֹּת).
It is also Miduyak beautifully that when it says (אֶת-חַג הַמַּצּוֹת) in this week’s Parsha, it is mentioned that Matzah should be eaten for seven days. When it mentions (חַג הָאָסִף) it doesn’t refer at all to eating in a Sukkah. The reason is, here it was not yet part of the Yom Tov. It was a holy day (חַג הָאָסִף) but not yet (חַג הַסֻּכֹּת). A beautiful GRA L’shitosoi. So this is one idea here in the end of the Parsha.

J015 - 2-11 - The Eyes Have It

Hands - Beshalach 5772

Moshe stretching his arms out heavenward caused Klal Yisrael to be able to win in battle. The Gemara in Maseches Rosh Hashanah 29a (16 lines from the top) says (מתני' והיה כאשר ירים משה ידו וגבר ישראל וגו' וכי ידיו של משה עושות מלחמה או שוברות מלחמה אלא לומר לך כל זמן שהיו ישראל מסתכלין כלפי מעלה ומשעבדין את לבם לאביהם שבשמים היו מתגברים ואם לאו היו נופלים) that that was related to Klal Yisrael looking heavenwards. What is the Remez of the stretching out of these hands by Gedolei Yisrael who Daven that way? They Daven as Shlomo Hamelech did by stretching out their arms to heaven. Here by Amaleik it is especially important. Because Rashi says that Amaleik came because Sherafu Yidaihem Min Hatorah. Rashi uses the same idea of the symbolism of hands. Rafu Yidaihem Min Hatorah, their hands were weakened in their torah study or Torah observance and therefore, Amaleik came. What is the symbol of this Remez of Yadaim?
I had once seen and I don’t remember the name of the Sefer someone who quoted in the name of the Chiddushai Harim in Parshas Re’ey not in regard to Amaleik but in regard to Bikkurim. Bikkurim is the gift brought to the Bais Hamikdash, one’s first fruits. The Posuk in Parshas Re’ey in 12:17 refers to it as (ותרומת ידך: אלו הבכורים) the gift of your hands. There too the question is why mention the hands? The Posuk in Devarim 26:4 says When the Bikkurim are brought to the Bais Hamikdash the language is the Kohen takes the basket from your hand. Why mention the hand? Anything brought to the Bais Hamikdash is given with the hand.
The Chidushei Harim says the mention of the hand is to show that a person has to understand that whatever he does with his hands comes from Hashem and not from him. The opposite of the sense of Kochi V’otzem Yadi. The sense that a person’s own ability is what causes success. On the contrary, it comes from Hashem. The first fruits of a farmers work is brought to the Beis Hamikdash as Terumas Yedchem. As an expression of the fact that the fruit comes from the Ribbono Shel Olam. Once he stretches out his hands towards heaven in Davening he is saying symbolically that my hands, the work of my hands all comes from the Ribbono Shel Olam. My prayer is that my hands should be successful. In Tehillim we find in 134:2 (שְׂאוּ-יְדֵכֶם קֹדֶשׁ; וּבָרְכוּ, אֶת-יְ רוָר) S’u Yidaichem Kodesh Uvarchu Es Hashem. Dovid Hamelech says stretch your hands out in holiness when you bless Hashem. Show that your hands, whatever they do comes from the Ribbono Shel Olam.
We find that Rebbi (the Tanna) before his death stuck out his fingers towards heaven. That idea that the hand represents that, is an idea of stretching out your hands towards heaven and saying that the Koach of my hand comes from Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
Sheivet Levi had no portion in Eretz Yisrael. They understood that everything they received came from Hashem. When the Kohen accepts the basket from the Yisrael Rashi says that the basket of the Bikkurim is brought to the Beis Hamikdash The Yisrael (the farmer) would be holding his hands under the basket. The Kohen would put his hands under the hands of the Yisrael and lift it heavenward. What a beautiful expression, showing the Kohen’s hands which are hands that understand that there is no Kochi V’otzem Yadi that it all comes from Hashem. He lifts up the Yisrael’s hands with his towards heaven. That is the expression of lifting ones hands heavenward. When Jews understand that everything depends on the blessing of heaven then (וגבר ישראל), Klal Yisrael has strength and Klal Yisrael is successful.
