Parshas Yisro ends after
Maftir in 20:18 with three assorted
Mitzvois which seem totally out of place.
For example, not walking up to the Mizbaiach if it is with steps ( וְלֹא-תַעֲלֶה
בְמַעֲלֹת, עַל-מִזְבְּחִי: אֲשֶׁר לֹא-תִגָּלֶה עֶרְוָתְךָ, עָלָיו), it must
be a ramp. Even worse, Parshas Mishpatim starts with V’eila Hamishpatim, which
Rashi explains to mean that the Vav is connecting it to the Aseres Hadibrois. Ai,
there are three Mitzvois that are in between them? What are the 3 Mitzvois?
1. A person shouldn’t make
any statues at all. 2. Make a Mizbaiach out of stones and don’t cut them with a
metal blade. 3. Not to go up with steps to the Mizbaiach. Rav Isaac Scher says,
when Hashem gave the Torah and the Umos Haolam refused it, the truth is, the
Umos Haolam are Michuyav not to kill anyway. So what does it mean that Lo
Sirtzach is not for me? Or Lo Sinaf is not for me?
A basic Yesoid in Toirah is
that it is not only the technical Guf Hamitzvah there is a certain Ruach
Hamitzvah which is included in the Mitzvah. Even in the D’oiraisa itself. The
idea of Tzniyus is not just not to be Mezaneh. That is the Ruach of the
Mitzvah. Klal Yisrael is Mitzuvah in the Guf and Ruach of the Mitzvah. So the
idea of not making statues is part of the Ruach of the Mitzvah of Avoidah
Zorah. The idea of not cutting the stones with a metal blade is part of the
Ruach of the Mitzvah of not killing someone. The same with walking up a ramp to
the Mizbaiach where it has the Ruach of the Mitzvah of Tzniyus.
