The Medrash in Koheles Rabbah which is often quoted in
Parshas Vayeitzei. The Medrash goes on the Posuk in Koheles 10:2 (לֵב חָכָם לִימִינוֹ,
וְלֵב כְּסִיל לִשְׂמֹאלוֹ) which basically says that a smart man has his heart in the
right place and a fool does not. The Medrash Darshuns as follows (לֵב חָכָם לִימִינו) is Yaakov Avinu because it
says in Parshas Vayeitzei 31:17 (וַיָּקָם, יַעֲקֹב; וַיִּשָּׂא אֶת-בָּנָיו וְאֶת-נָשָׁיו, עַל-הַגְּמַלִּים) it says
Yaakov took his sons and his wives, his children came before his wives. His
primary focus was on protecting his children and then on his wives.
The
Medrash says that (לֵב חָכָם לִימִינוֹ, וְלֵב
כְּסִיל לִשְׂמֹאל) that a fool’s heart is on his left side in the wrong spot. This
refers to Eisav on who it says in Parshas Vayishlach 36:6 (וַיִּקַּח עֵשָׂו אֶת-נָשָׁיו וְאֶת-בָּנָיו וְאֶת-בְּנֹתָיו, וְאֶת-כָּל-נַפְשׁוֹת בֵּיתוֹ, וְאֶת-מִקְנֵהוּ וְאֶת-כָּל-בְּהֶמְתּוֹ וְאֵת כָּל-קִנְיָנוֹ, אֲשֶׁר רָכַשׁ בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיֵּלֶךְ אֶל-אֶרֶץ, מִפְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב אָחִיו) Eisav is transporting his
family and it says his wives before his children. There is no doubt that he
loved his wives, however, he didn’t realize that the most important asset a
person has is his children. So he put wives before children. Yaakov who was a Chochom put his children
before his wives. That is a wonderful Medrash and the reason it is being
mentioned here in Parshas Shemos is because here in Parshas Shemos 4:20 we see
that ( וַיִּקַּח מֹשֶׁה
Rabbeinu puts his wife before his children and that seems to contradict the
Medrash that says that a wise person knows to take his children first? So this
is a Stirah that seems to contradict the Medrash on Koheles. Tzorech Iyun
Gadol!
